Individuals recovering from injuries or attempting to prevent injuries are often left to fend for themselves when it comes to exercising regularly in the gym.
Why is this?
Physical therapists are often restricted by insurance, forcing them to discharge patients when skilled care is no longer “medically necessary”. This means that when patients have returned to normal activities of daily living and/or are no longer experiencing significant pain or functional limitations, insurance companies will frequently stop covering treatment.
Now the patient is left without guidance on how to safely return to normal exercise while possibly still dealing with a lingering problem or attempting to prevent re-injury.
Personal trainers, while familiar with programming exercises in the gym, do not receive formal education of many common orthopedic injuries and specifics on how to address and prevent these injuries. Additionally, there is often little to no communication between the two providers to facilitate a smooth transition of the patient/client.
My mission as a fitness coach is to bridge the gap between the gym and the clinic, by providing individuals with personalized or standard fitness programs that focus on safe progressions, accessory and mobility exercises, and appropriate adaptations for specific injuries or pain. My goal is to foster independence and confidence in all clients to participate in and enjoy physical activity without fear.
Disclaimer: I am not providing physical therapy services. These exercise programs are not a replacement for physical therapy. If you are experiencing pain and/or functional limitations that have not yet been evaluated by a professional, seek care from an orthopedic doctor or physical therapist.
